The story never changed. What changed was how much of it I could finally see.

When people ask me how this began, they want the moment. The night it happened, the clean line between before and after. I understand the impulse, because for years I wanted the same thing. What I have come to appreciate instead is that the evolution of Reconnective Healing has been slower and far stranger than any single moment, and that most of what I believed at the start turned out to be scaffolding I would eventually take down.

What I Thought Was Happening

In 1993 I had been a chiropractor for twelve years, working out of an office on Melrose Place in Los Angeles. A receptionist I never should have hired talked me into a card reading on Venice Beach, and the woman behind the card table mentioned, almost as an afterthought, that she did work that reconnected the body's meridian lines to the grid lines of the planet. It cost $333. I said no thank you, went home, could not stop thinking about it, and eventually called her back.

The following Monday, seven of my patients asked me who else had been in the room. Some said it felt like people were walking around the table. Three said running. Two said flying. In twelve years of practice, not one person had ever said anything remotely like that. It did not take a piano falling on my head to work out that something had changed.

So I did what anyone would do. I built an explanation. Something had been given to me, I decided. A gift had arrived, and it was coming out through my hands.

The Evidence I Kept Asking For

For a while my body cooperated with that story. My palms blistered, dozens of tiny blisters that vanished within a few hours. Then one day a palm bled, not dramatically, more like I had pricked it with a pin. I was glad. It was something I could point at. Something I could show people and say, see? Someone in the room said it was an initiation. I asked into what. Nobody could tell me.

Later that year I was at a dinner party where one of the guests was in an advanced stage of AIDS, wheeling a morphine drip, his vision blurred on the right side by CMV. I worked with him for about five minutes. His pain nearly disappeared, and a minute after he walked out of the room he announced that he could see clearly through both eyes. The next morning my own left eye had swollen to three times its size. For some reason it always landed on the opposite side of my body.

That was when it occurred to me to ask whether I was taking illness on. And then something quieter occurred to me: I did not need any of it. The manifestations were never making the healings happen, and they were never required as proof. After that realization, I never had another one. That is the earliest point I can put my finger on in the evolution of Reconnective Healing, and it happened inside me rather than in the room.

I Went Looking for Someone Who Knew

My assumption was that somebody, somewhere, had the manual. I called the woman from the beach. She sent me to her teacher. Her teacher listened to the whole story, went quiet for a long moment, and said it was fascinating. Fascinating, I learned, was New Age for you are on your own.

So I kept going. A well-known Los Angeles psychic, whom I visited without giving my last name, told me that something came out through my hands and that I would write books. I laughed at him about the books. I had read maybe two in my life, one of which I was still coloring. Within weeks I could not stop reading. I sat in a seminar with Brian Weiss and got pulled onstage. I collected teachers and theories the way other people collect stamps.

Underneath every one of those phone calls was the same conviction: that this was something to be understood and then performed correctly. It did not occur to me that the search itself was the obstruction. Every one of those detours became part of the evolution of Reconnective Healing, though never in the way I intended.

The Sentence That Took Me Twenty Years to Live

When I wrote The Reconnection in 2001, I described the healer as a link in a chain, or as a prism that light passes through on its way somewhere else. Those images were honest reports of what I could see at the time. They were also, I notice now, images that keep me in the middle of the sentence. Light passes through the prism. The prism is still doing something.

In that same book I wrote that the freedom of being will release you from the oppression of doing, and I wrote a chapter called Get Out of the Way. I meant it. I could see the destination clearly while standing several flights of stairs below it. That gap between what I could articulate and what I could actually inhabit is the honest shape of the evolution of Reconnective Healing. The accurate word for it is widening.

What I Know Now

By the time Jillian and I wrote The Direct Path to Healing, the language had moved. Reconnective Healing is not another item for a healer’s toolbox, and it cannot be, because it is not a tool at all. Every box and every tool is finite by design, and everything finite is already contained inside the infinite. What we are interacting with is a comprehensive spectrum of Energy, Light & Information®, and it has no interest in our thoughts or our belief systems, any more than the sun seeks to know how or why it shines.

The largest turn in the evolution of Reconnective Healing is about who is doing what. I once believed I had been handed a rare ability. I now understand that this makes everyone special and no one special, which are the same sentence. The healing was never outside of us waiting to be imported. We are not travelling toward wholeness. We are already wholeness, and healings occur in the awakening to that. Healing is an intrinsic part of who you are rather than something you do.

Which means the burden I carried for years was imaginary. Releasing the sense of being responsible for an outcome also releases the part of the ego that wants the credit for it. Both go at once. What remains is participation, and on a larger scale, witnessing.

What Changes When the Doing Stops

People who come to this after years of study often describe the same handful of shifts:

  • The hunt for the right teacher goes quiet, and the relief of that surprises them
  • Evidence stops being the point, so its absence stops being alarming
  • Sessions ask less of them and reveal more
  • The question changes from how do I do this to what am I willing to notice
  • Credit and blame loosen their grip at the same moment

Each of these is simply what is left over once the effort in the wrong direction has been set down.

Thirty Years in Rooms

I have spent three decades in rooms full of people in countries whose languages I do not speak. Thirty years in, the evolution of Reconnective Healing shows up mostly as subtraction. The phenomena have not changed much. What has changed is how little I now bring into the room with me. You can watch that for yourself in the live footage on our YouTube channel, where the responses show up in real time, independent of what anyone in the room expected or intended.

It shows up the same way at a distance. In a Reconnective Healing® distance session you relax in your own space at the scheduled time. No screen, no call, and no technology of any kind plays a role in the healing itself. Awareness has no distance to cross.

Recognition, Not Acquisition

If you set The Reconnection beside The Direct Path to Healing, the vocabulary is almost unrecognizable from one to the other. The truth in them is identical. What evolved was my ability to see it and to say it plainly, which is what the evolution of Reconnective Healing has always been.

What arrived on that table in Venice Beach was a recognition, and it has been widening ever since. The same recognition is available to you, and it is not waiting for you to become qualified for it.

You were never given this. You were never without it.

FAQs

How did you discover Reconnective Healing®?

In 1993 I was twelve years into practice as a chiropractor in Los Angeles. A receptionist I never should have hired talked me into a card reading on Venice Beach, and the woman behind that card table ended up doing two sessions of work on me that cost me more than a week of groceries. The following Monday, seven of my patients asked me who else had been in the room while their eyes were closed. Some of them described people walking around the table. Two of them said flying. In twelve years of practice nobody had ever said anything remotely like that to me, and the healings started from there.

Has Reconnective Healing changed since your first book?

The interaction is exactly what it always was. What has changed is me. The Reconnection, in 2001, is an honest record of what I could see at the time. The Direct Path to Healing, in 2022, is a far wider view of the same thing. If you read them next to each other, what you are really watching is me catching up to something that was already fully present in the room the entire time.

Do you still stand by what you wrote in The Reconnection?

I do. What I wrote then holds up inside the parameters I could see then. Newton's equations still fly spacecraft, and nobody calls them wrong because Einstein turned up afterward. A larger frame does not cancel a smaller one. It surrounds it. I would write some of those sentences and describe some of those experiences differently today, and I would not take any of them back.

Do I need to read your books to experience this?

No, and honestly I would rather you had the experience first and the vocabulary afterward. The books describe something. They do not install it. Reconnective Healing® is an approach, an interaction with the spectrum of Energy, Light & Information®. It is not a modality, technique, or treatment, so there is nothing in it for you to study in advance and nothing you can arrive underprepared for.

Do I need to believe in it, or prepare in any way?

Neither. Babies and animals respond, and so do people who walk in convinced the whole thing is nonsense. These frequencies have never once asked anyone's opinion of them. All that is asked of you is that you show up and let yourself notice what happens. You are welcome to stay skeptical the whole way through. Curiosity turns out to be far more useful here than belief, because curiosity lets you notice what is actually happening rather than checking it against what you decided in advance.
